CREATIVE DATE NIGHT! TRYING A NEW HOBBY

One of my new year’s goals is to be more creative & explore different hobbies. In addition, Wyatt & I really wanted to step up our date night habits to be more intentional to soak up this time as childless newlyweds. Since he works from home and I love to cook dinner in house, it is easy for us to stay in or slip into the habit of planning the same dates. 2025 especially brought so much change & movement that we lost a little creativity and are so excited to be welcoming new hobbies this year!

In order to keep us accountable, we’re doing ABC dates this year - planning a date that starts with a certain letter of the alphabet. There’s 26 letters in the alphabet & 52 weeks in a year, so roughly 2 dates a month has been our goal! We debated going in order of the alphabet, but found it aligned better with our schedules to go out of order & just keep track. The first of the dates we planned was a beginner’s night to pottery wheel throwing! Pottery painting has been one of our favorite dates for a few years, so we’ve always wanted to try out the process from start to finish!

The showroom at Avenue Pottery:

We found a local pottery studio - Avenue Pottery in West Palm Beach, FL - and side note: her studio is sooooo gorgeous. She is such a creative & unapologetic person - I love how bold her personality is. She has some of the most unique and curated pieces I’ve ever seen! Would highly recommend checking her out if you’re in SoFlo. Their frequent events always look like a vibe & she hosts kids classes too if you’re interested!

Their beginner wheel throwing class happens twice a month at $75 per person - included is 2 hours of guided wheel throwing with one of their instructors & 2 pieces of your pottery to take home a few days later. We had a group of 6 people that night - with a mix of couples/friends/individuals. After learning the setup & how to use the wheel, most of our time was focused on centering our clay. The instructor gave us around 1lb of clay to work into a ball, then throw in the middle of the wheel and guide with your hands towards the center. It was critical to have an instructor there (especially for the first time) as she was able to guide our hands and give feedback depending on how our clay was moving. It definitely takes some upper body strength & coordination as you use your entire body to stabilize the clay with bracing the movement of the wheel. You could make as many pieces as you wanted in the allotted time, but had to narrow your work down to two pieces to be fired in the kiln. Avenue Pottery also allowed us to come back to glaze our pieces for $15 extra.

The entire experience was so much fun and got us inspired to be more creative in making art. PLUS! As a girl that loves sustainability/for everything in my home to have either significance and/or purpose - it’s so fun to create items you can use in your home. Our instructor kept motivating us to make “something that holds something” - encouraging us to let go of expectation & judgement and just start somewhere.

Here’s some of the pieces we ended up making:

I’m obsessed with the little blueberry bowl I made! My hyperfixation breakfast for the last year has been plain greek yogurt with fruit (often berries, kiwi or banana) with peanut butter, flax seeds and cinnamon. It makes me feel so happy to eat it out of this cutie bowl I made!

Wyatt made a cute miniature cupcake stand that he says will be perfect for someone’s birthday - a little stand for their special pastry!

Then two additional small bowls/cups - one of them we use for single shot espresso pulls and the other holds little clips in the kitchen. So so so much fun - would recommend highly!

Let us know if you have other fun date night ideas we should try or that you’ve loved & stayed tuned for more fun date night coverage! :)
